Odyssey Unbound trip Over time, during the past two months, the idea of hiking the Grand Canyon morphed into an itinerary anchored by our hike down the south wall of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River. We submitted a request for a camping permit in late April along with hundreds, if not thousands, of other people. Indian Gardens is a small campground located in an oasis two thirds of the way down. It's six miles down from the trailhead on the south rim. We stayed there two nights in April, 1985 when we hiked down the canyon with our friend, Steve Sternbach. In April of this year, we submitted a request for a campsite for two nights in September. We were lucky to get a reservation for the nights of September 16th and 17th. Counting back from those dates, we decided to leave Sunday, September 9th, in time to celebrate Gina's birthday in Pittsburgh, a city neither of us knows much about. Of course, events could conspire to change this itinerary...the only dates set in ston...
